In modern households, food waste is a significant issue, with a substantial amount of food being thrown away due to spoilage and expired dates. This project aims to mitigate food waste by utilizing smart technology to monitor food freshness and expiration dates inside refrigerators.
Food waste is a critical global issue, contributing to environmental pollution and economic loss. Many households face challenges in managing food inventory, often leading to forgotten items that spoil and need to be discarded because it can cause poisoning and toxicity . Traditional methods of tracking food expiration are cumbersome and inefficient, necessitating a smarter solution.
This project employs a smart camera system, specifically the FridgeCam, to automate the tracking of food expiration dates. The FridgeCam captures images of the fridge’s contents, analyzes these images to identify food items, and tracks their freshness over time. The system sends notifications to users when items are nearing their expiration dates, helping them utilize their groceries more efficiently and reduce waste. Key features include:
Remote viewing of fridge contents via a smartphone app.
Automated expiration date tracking and notifications.
Integration with recipe apps to suggest meal ideas based on the food available.
Data collection on food spoilage patterns to improve future predictions.
